お土産 / Omiyage

Omiyage is a project I worked on together with Japanese/Korean Artist Simsa Cho.

It is based on the idea of meeting each other. Us both being artists, we never met in any artistic context but always on other events or parties.

At the Tsubaki Night in Paradiso, we both participated in a dance contest, at which you could win a one week Japan Railpass. Of course, I wanted to win it, because I was going to Japan just a few days later. Unfortunately, I’m a bad dancer and instead of me Simsa won this precious ticket.

We both had the idea of a barter. As a treat, I was supposed to bring him something special from Japan.

I found it quite difficult, to find something special for a Japanese person from Japan.

I collected all sorts of objects, which I found on the street during my travel through Japan, each piece itself having a possible story. To give it a framework, I eventually constructed an Omiyage-Box and assembled a selection of the found items with this box. The box and its contents create another fictional narrative. The box itself shall add the idea of an abstract game with certain rules. So, also the box contains the idea of the interplay between Simsa and me.

For the future we want to work on further projects.
